As we approach the Summer Solstice…

Blog vol 6.46. As we approach the Summer Solstice…
One of my children lived in Vancouver for a few years and I would jokingly say that in November, if the sun made an appearance, the Vancouverites wouldn’t know what it was. No doubt, Vancouver has beautiful mountains and water, but give me the sun anytime.
There is such a thing as too much sun, or an unpredictable sun like in the book series, The Three Body Problem, where the unpredictable movements of stars and planets cause devastation and prolonged dry spells. We (us humans here on planet earth 2026 AD) actually have the ability to protect ourselves from too much sun.
Or so we thought. CBC Marketplace recently did an exposé on SPF as sun protection. https://www.cbc.ca/news/marketplace/spf-sunscreen-protection-9.7106878 SPF is a three- letter acronym for Sun Protection Factor, so a SPF 30 gives roughly 30 times more protection than bare skin.
The amount of sun protection provided by any product varied hugely depending on the consistency of the cream in the tube, the way the SPF cream is applied, and the amount of sweat present, as well as the time of day (the sun is at its peak around 1:00pm to 3:00pm) and the clothing worn (wide brimmed hats are a great choice). Food for thought.
At Burlington Eyecare we take care of eyes, which also need protection from the sun.
We only work with high quality optical sun wear, consistent quality to block harmful rays consistently. This is crucial. All eyes need UV protection, especially children since they have large pupils. To kick off the summer, Burlington Eyecare is highlighting the Maui Jim line of sunglasses this Saturday, June 13. All the lenses in the Maui Jim sunglass line provide full protection for UVA, UVB, UVC, and for high energy blue light. Good and reliable sun protection for your eyes.
The sunglasses also look great! There are so many options for mirror coating and for varying colours and density of colour. There is a design and fit for any sport or summer activity. Functional, yes, but also super-cool designs, so you can look great AND protect your eyes.
This Saturday, June 13 10:00am to 2:00pm, Burlington Eyecare is having our annual “Maui Jim Day”. We bring in the whole Maui Jim line up of sunglasses for you to try out, and give one-time discounts on this great product (there is even a draw for a pair of non-prescription Maui Jim’s:), and we hula dance and celebrate the arrival of summer with our whole team.
Come out this Saturday and enjoy the sun and fun at Burlington Eyecare.
The good doctor
