This is number six in our blog series.
The College of Optometrists of Ontarioand the Ministry of Healthhave issued a new directive and now optometry offices all throughout this great province are open for non-urgent care.
Sorry to be a killjoy, but, it is not a free for all, like a Kmart blue light special, with everybody rushing to our door. There is still a virus out there and it is still spreading in our communities. So, safety first.
Our office will start by contacting our most vulnerable and then the next in line as we fill our appointment spaces. There will be pre-screening questions and waiting outside our door to be escorted/screened through our doors. Come with your fanciest mask.
The Centre for Disease Control has concluded that the spread is mostly by air droplets, meaning that social distancing and masks will be the way forward.
Those nasty masks and your spectacles do not get along so well. If the mask is not properly fit, your lenses will steam up; I see a lot of nodding heads out there. So what is to be done? Well you can just stay in the fog, like we have been about this virus for the better part of five months, (not recommended), or you can get a better fitting mask with a snug nose covering which will help direct moisture downward and away from your lenses. Putting your glasses over top of the mask can also help. Some premium lenses come with an anti-fog coating, but if your do not have this feature you can treat the lenses yourself. There are some good anti-fog creams you can apply directly to the lenses of your glasses which work by preventing the water droplets in your breath from forming fog by minimizing surface tension. A more accessible alternative, is to wash your glasses with dish detergent which also works on this surface tension.
I look forward to see you, one at a time, at the re-opening of Burlington Eyecare. We are ready to provide the excellent eye care and services that you have come to know. We are even taking new patients, just get in line (and social distance, of course).
Til next week,
Dr. Mark Germain, The Good Doctor, Burlington Eyecare
