the good doctor on: Eyecare Emergencies

Blog #33
We are here for eye emergencies.
This past Saturday I was reminded how needed this service is. A family member was experiencing a sore and very red eye. She had recent surgery for her eye and was concerned whether this was a complication from that procedure. After seeing her and ruling out more extreme possibilities, we figured out the problem and were able to prescribe a treatment. They left with their minds at rest, with a treatment plan, and with a follow-up appointment. No long waits in emergency or after-hours clinics, no unnecessary exposure to viruses, and immediate assessment by an eye-care professional.
The optometrists at Burlington Eyecare have excellent relationships with the various ophthalmologists in the area and can refer emergencies the same day if necessary. As you are aware, you cannot see a specialist without a referral. Our job is to make sure you get the treatment and care you need whatever that is.
If you are having any problems with your eyes, ranging from a foreign body in the eye, to a lost contact lens, recent floaters and flashes, a pink or red eye, or reduction in vision, call our office, our staff will talk you through your problem and line up an appointment on that day. Unfortunately some emergency visits are not covered by OHIP and do require a minimal payment, depending on OHIP parameters.
We take very seriously our role as primary eye care providers. When March 17, 2020 happened, most optometric practices were closed due to COVID-19. We remained open for emergency visits only, showing up two to three mornings a week from mid-March to the end of May. We were equipped with the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE), worked within very strict guidelines, and were able to help many of our patients with the various problems that came up. It is very rewarding work, and a very real service we offer to our patients.
Til next week,
