The 17th Annual Bright Run in Support of Breast Cancer Research

Blog vol 5.12. The 17th Annual Bright Run in Support of Breast Cancer Research.

We at Burlington Eyecare support the Bright Run every year. We know, we have seen, what breast cancer can do, and we want to help find treatments, or even better, preventions (wouldn’t that be great!?).

In February of 2000, while the world was waking up to an unknown virus later called Covid, we at Burlington Eyecare had received some terrible news. Sorry Covid, but dealing with a disease as insidious and as close to home as cancer, was a lot worse. We had been walking alongside office manager, Karen, and her husband, Clint, for some time as Clint struggled with cancer, so the news of Dr. Jerilee Nyman being diagnosed that February was very real.

Jerilee, an optometrist in our office much loved by all, had metastaic breast cancer and it had spread to her bones. During a world pandemic, Jerilee and her family and friends walked the cancer journey. On February 20, 2022, 2 years later, Jerilee was taken home to be with her Lord and Saviour.

Cancer is nasty.  My mother, at the age of 63 (way too young), died of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in 1999. We all have cancer stories.

So the Bright Run, every year on the weekend after Labour Day. September 7, 2024 at Christie’s Conservation area.  Registration starts at 9:00. There is a kidzone, live music, Sunni Genesco from 102.9 hosting, food and drinks available for purchase, and, of course, pink, much pink. The walk/run/stroll begins at 10:30 and everything wraps up by 12:00. (More information here).

This event and fundraiser was close to the heart of Jerilee.  She and her family were/are big supporters.

Come out if you can to show your solidarity with these families in the midst of their cancer struggles. Support any way you can.  It is one way we can help.
