Blog Post

On giving thanks

Blog vol 3. 20 On giving thanks.

I started this blog during the quiet times of early 2020 (read early COVID) and shockingly, or perhaps more sadly, have not yet done a blog on Thanksgiving. We, at Burlington Eyecare, have much to be thankful for.

I am most thankful for people.

First, those I work alongside every day: my colleagues in Optometry and Opticianry, who truly get it. It is about taking care of people, about putting the needs of the patient first and foremost. It is the so-called little things like explaining a hard-to-understand process of the eye or an intricate lenswear design or helping someone out of their chair and down the hall. It is about respecting our patients, treating them as human beings, giving them the time of day.

Thank you.

Second, my staff. I have had staff leave this year for personal reasons, mostly academic, and I would like them to know that they are much missed. My present staff is wonderful, and they more than get it, or more to the point, I am getting it from them. They care. They are the ones that make sure every interaction is meaningful. They do the little things to ensure that your time with us, whether on the phone or by text, or in person, is special.

Thank you.

Thirdly, the University of Waterloo student interns who bring their enthusiasm and energy to our practice. I have been very impressed with their level of knowledge and compassion. It is an honour and a joy to help prepare the next generation of Optometrists.

Thank you.

Fourthly, the unsung ones who deliver excellent service to us: the people working in the eyewear, lenswear, contact lens, and optical equipment industries, and, of course, our IT team. We have a wonderful relationship with every one of these people and they help us to provide the excellent care that our patients have come to know.

Thank you.

Fifthly, I owe a huge debt to those who have come before us: Dr. Ron Watson, Dr. Nancy Wilson, and Dr. Jerilee Nyman, who set the bar very high in providing unsurpassed care. I know that their example and legacy will continue at Burlington Eyecare.

Thank you.

Lastly, and most importantly, our patients. You are why we are here on Fairview Street striving to provide the best care possible. I am most thankful for the trust that you put in us.  I so enjoy getting to know you all, we have so many really wonderful patients.

Thank you.

Til next week,
