How I spent my long weekend

Blog vol 3. 11. How I spent my long weekend.

Each week you, the reader, have come to expect fast-paced drama (right?), and this week… well, not so fast-paced, but oh so necessary.

Every civic holiday, my wife and I rent a commercial carpet cleaner (they’re always available, strange, and on a long weekend too; what is everyone doing?) and clean all our carpets. No exceptions this year, we spent the better part of two days moving furniture (and other things, it’s the other things that get you) and going over the carpets, repeating in high traffic areas. Why?

Dirt and sand, which are very gritty, get ground into the fabric of the carpet and actually wear out the fabric. It is also a pleasure to walk on clean carpet with pile refreshed and to be on clean carpet enjoying grandkids (this is where they hang out).

Then there is the pool, which has never looked better. A pool requires going out every morning and cleaning out the basket of leaves and checking the pH, chlorine and free chlorine levels. When the balance starts to go, and it will, you are on top of it. It also helps to have a good pool store that can analyze your water and “prescribe” the right mixture of chlorine, no-phos, or stabilizer.

You can see a picture coming into view, as we bring the pixels together, a life message appears. Regular maintenance is critical.

As with carpets and pools (not to mention aquariums, pets, cars, bicycles, furnaces,…) , maintenance is not optional. As one sage, entering his 71st year once said , “If I had known I was going to live so long, I’d have taken better care of myself.”

Consider it an investment.

Or a responsibility.

Good stewardship.

Taking care of the people you care about.

Eyes are no different. If you have not had an eye exam within the past two years, schedule one. Many things can be prevented or minimized if caught early. Some serious conditions have no obvious symptoms in their early stages, such as glaucoma.

If you have kids, schedule them for eye exams before school; again, caught early many problems can be prevented.

Have you refreshed your contact lens supply? Your  solutions? Had a check-up? What about protective eyewear?

You get the idea: regular maintenance.
