Colours of a different sort

Blog vol 6.6. Colours of a different sort.
On most business days, I drive past this median as I take a left turn towards Burlington Eyecare. The middle of the median is a garden planted with an assortment of annual flowers — petunias, marigolds, salvia, and coleus. This bed is part of the Adopt-a-Flowerbed program run by the City of Burlington (find out more here).
It is part of our mandate at Burlington Eyecare to take care of people’s eyes and their eye health and this flowerbed is a small, but important part, of that task. The flowerbed we sponsor sits just south of our office on Fairview, between us and Farm Boy. We requested that the bed “pop” this year in celebration of Burlington Eyecare’s 60th anniversary. Do notice the flowers before fall arrives; they are lovely.
The Adopt-a-Flowerbed program is citywide. There are other sponsors, like Billings Court Manor: Long Term Care, who support a bed further down Fairview, or the Drury Lane Theatre community and many friends who sponsored a smaller bed on Walker’s Line to remember a beloved citizen, Jeanne Montague, who was wardrobe mistress for Drury Lane for years (Read more about Ms. Montague here).
It is a great idea, a win-win for all involved. We all get a beautiful city to enjoy. The workers do a great job maintaining the beds; they always look good. And, businesses can promote themselves while beautifying the community. Genius.
It really takes a village to raise a child, and it takes a village to encourage each other. Burlington continues to grow, a fact bemoaned by many of my patients, but that does not mean that we do not take care of our little corner of the world.
Enjoy the flowers, walk in the parks and on the trails. Burlington rests on the shore of Lake Ontario, a wonderful location. Then there is Mount Nemo conservation area, so many truly spectacular things to enjoy. And, we have the opportunity to join in making Burlington even more beautiful for each other.
‘til next week,
The good doctor
