Bifocal Contacts are Worth a Try

Blog vol 5.21. Bifocal Contacts are Worth a Try
If you miss it… you miss it.
These words have been the long-time marketing slogan of Bay Bloor Radio in Toronto, started in 1946 by Sol Mandlsohn, and now operated by his son, Mark. The slogan came on before a big event like an anniversary or president’s sale or an upcoming Black Friday sale. We had our own special event at Burlington Eyecare yesterday and if you missed it, it’s NOT too late. Give us a call.
Bausch and Lomb, the makers of the first soft contact lenses in 1956 for the North American market, have been researching and developing new products for seven decades. All this work has resulted in some fancy new lenses, like the new Ultra Daily Multifocal contact lens. We introduced this lens officially yesterday at the practice, doing trial fittings for interested people. It was a very busy day.
We have had multifocal contacts since the 1980’s, so why all the hub-bub? This new lens has a lot of pluses: high oxygen transmission (healthy), specially formulated lens surface and edge design (all-day comfort), built in UV filters (protection), aspheric optics (clarity), and reading correction (no reading glasses:). Sounds too good to be true. For some people it is, but for some people who have active lives and a lot of visual demands, and eyes that will adapt, it can be a great option.
How does a bifocal work in a contact lens? Bifocals, in glasses, have two different focal points, one for distance and one for near, and the trick to using them is to direct your eyes into different zones for different viewing. The bifocal, or multifocal, contact lens works on a different basis. It relies on the pupil of your eye closing down when you are reading to use the center of the lens which has more near power. For distance, the pupil opens ups and the outer zone comes into play. Not everyone’s eyes are comfortable with this way of seeing; mine, for example, will not cooperate.
Who would benefit from these lenses? Anyone with a reading prescription who is currently wearing reading glasses or progressives can try them out. If they work for you, they can be an excellent way to go. Totally worth a try.
If you missed it… give us a call,
The good doctor
