Designated Drugs Regulation
On April 6, 2011, the Ontario Government approved a regulation that allows Optometrists in Ontario to prescribe medications for their patients. Optometrists are now able to prescribe medications and treatments for various conditions including routine bacterial eye infections, to more serious eye diseases including glaucoma. This change will broaden access to medically necessary services across the province, will provide better healthcare, and will alleviate wait times at Emergency Rooms and Walk-in Clinics, for patients with eye-related concerns.
Do you know that 75% of vision loss is preventable or treatable, and preventing blindness is an urgent challenge facing our aging population? Access to clinical care will now be drastically improved as a result of this new regulation.
Both Dr. Germain and Dr. Sangster are highly educated and trained in prescribing medications for their patients, and provide emergency care appointments as well as regular eye health examinations.
