Optical Coherence Tomography

What if we could take a “slice” of your retina out, at the macula, for example, to detect early forms of wet macular degeneration? The problem is that procedure would be a very invasive. We now have the technology to take a “slice” of your retina through light. The OCT does just that, giving us all the layers of your retina in an instant. Is there a build up of any fluid at the macula, or is the nerve fibre layer getting thinner? These are questions we can definitely answer now, allowing us to detect macular degeneration earlier, see macular edema in diabetes and even detect glaucoma at a far earlier stage.
