A field test is a procedure used to check the peripheral vision of a patient. The patient's head is placed on a chin and forehead rest and lights are presented of varying size, brightness and location, then the patient presses a button when they see the light.

It is very good at detecting optic nerve diseases like glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, optic atrophy and pituitary tumours. It is also used for the Ministry of Transport testing to ensure fitness for driving.
When a person has glaucoma, it is used to monitor any progression and if a person is on certain medications, like plaquenil for arthritis, the person’s macula is monitored.
