Myopia
Myopia, another name for nearsightedness, is a condition with the eye where a person cannot see very well at a distance. Traditionally, it has been treated with spectacle correction and more recently, with contact lenses. With the advancement of lasers and computers, Custom Lasik can now permanently correct it.
At Burlington Eyecare we work with a Laser Centre, called TLC, that performs this procedure, where 320 points on the cornea are corrected, individually, with a laser. A patient’s vision can even be corrected to better than 20/20. We have been holding information nights, every 2 months, where a representative from TLC comes in and personally speaks to potential candidates on a one-to-one basis.
Burlington Eyecare also provides Advanced OrthoKeratology (AOK), a procedure that uses rigid contact lenses to “flatten” your cornea while you sleep. Once we determine that you are a good candidate, we fit lenses that are worn at night, as a type of retainer, to level out the central zone of the corneal epithelia. The lens flattens the cornea and changes your prescription. You go without glasses or contact lenses during the day, and wear the contacts at night to sleep. We have had excellent results! Ask us if you qualify!
Prevention
Q: Can anything be done to stop or slow down the progression of myopia?
A: Not always, but there are certain situations where a bifocal fitted early on with a child can retard its progression. Also, there has been strong evidence to prove that the use of AOK lenses at night can also slow it down.
